After a scrumptious meal at Depot we decided to head to Giapo for some desert as it was on P’s New Years resolution list to try a new restaurant/desert place and I have wanted to try it forever. So off we went with our full tummies…
S & I said we couldn’t eat too much and we would share however that soon changed. Upon getting to Giapo there was a queue outside the door almost going past the other stores. While were waiting a waitress came by with little pieces of Chocolate & Banana brownies & trays of water.
After a wait of 15 mins we were greeted at the door by a gentleman claiming to be Giapo & he did a slightly amusing and cringeworthy spiel about this being his house etc. He explained how the process worked. We get to go in and try the various flavours on offer of ice cream and gelato. We then pick a flavour and the staff behind the counter would add their magic and jazz the ice cream up.
We tried the Garden of New Zealand which was a fresh tasting berry gelato, the chocolate explosion which was an intense dark chocolate, the Afghan which was by far the best of the lot. P decided on the Afghan Cookie, S on the Chocolate explosion & I picked the Tiramisu. I don’t know what it is about a Tiramisu but I cannot go without ordering one if it is on the menu. And you can’t not come to an Italian Ice cream shop and try their Tiramisu flavoured ice-cream.
This place gets crowded quite easily so you have to be quite good at manoeuvring around the crowds with your little treat and ensuring you don’t drop it on the floor.
There are a few benches on the outside you can sit on but we took our ice creams to the nearby Aotea Square and enjoyed the gorgeous lights and the ice cream.
All in all definitely a desert place to visit. Prices are $7.90 upwards for the cup that we got. Gorgeous treat to have with someone or a few someone special.
